Far Ralia

Far Ralia is a unique landscape scale habitat restoration project that combines both woodland creation and peatland restoration. The native woodland creation element of the project has been designed with minimum intervention in mind. This means that the woodland will not be cut down for at least 100 years. This approach improves the resilience of the project and enhances the broadest range of ecosystem services.

  • +300,000 carbon sequestered over the life of the project.

    • 1,071 hectare mixed native woodland located in partially in the Cairngorm national park

    • The land was not used for rural sporting pursuits or farming for decades

    • The remnants of the old woodland are preserved in the peat showing that this land was once a rich diverse landscape with healthy woodland and peatland.

    • Native tree species allow for the recovery of natural ecosystems leading to many other co-benefits

    • Project duration: 100 years.
